WALKTHROUGH FOR HOW TO SET UP DSL HARDWARE

 1. SET UP THE FILTERS. This MUST be done before anything else or the DSL will not work correctly. The filters must be attached to all phones and devices that use the phone line. This includes: telephones, cordless phone bases, security systems, satellite TV systems, life alert, fax machines, etc... ANYTHING that is connected to the phone line that the DSL uses.

 2.  Plug the phone cord into the back of the modem where it says "DSL". Plug the other end of that phone cord to an empty phone jack. THIS PHONE CORD MUST REMAIN UNFILTERED. This will be the only thing on the phone line that is unfiltered. If a spiltter is involved, plug it into the side of the splitter that does not have a filter on it. If a DSL filter/splitter was included, plug it into the side that says "DSL".

 3. Plug the ethernet cable into the jack that says "Ethernet" or "ENET" on the back of the modem. Plug the other end of the ethernet cable into the ethernet jack on the back of the computer. Or, if the customer is using a router, plug the other end of the ethernet cable into the corresponding port on the back of the router. This port is usually named "internet", but may be called something else depending on the make and model of the router.

 4. Plug the power cord into the back of the modem and plug the other end into the wall socket. Preferably, this power cord can be plugged into a surge protector or a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).

 5. Turn the modem on. If the modem has a power button, press it. When the modem is powered on, you should see the "power" light turn on on the front of the modem.

 6. Wait until you have a solid green "power" light and a soild green "DSL" light. The DSL light should take no longer than 2 minute to turn solid green. If it doesn't come on or is blinking for more than 1 or 2 minutes, then the modem is not getting a good signal. You would then normally check to make sure that you've setup the filters correctly and, if so, perform further troubleshooting as needed.

This concludes the hardware setup for DSL modems.

The next step would be setting up the computer and, if applicable, the router.
